Steam in the Netherlands

The following photos were taken on an Inside Track holiday to Holland in August 2001, and show some of the various steam railways that operate in the country. Unfortunately I was using an old camera, which needed servicing at the time, and therefore the quality of some of the pictures was less than I had been hoping for.

The first railway visited was the Rotterdamshe Tramweg Maatschappij (Rotterdam Tramway Museum), near Ouddorp on the Dutch Coast. Here are preserved a number of vehicles from the Rotterdam tram system, on a 1067mm narrow gauge line running along beside the dyke for about 7km.

Further south is the 11km standard-gauge Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele, which runs between Goes and Hoedekenskerke in Zeeland.

The Zuid Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij is in the far south of Holland, near Maastricht. It is 16km long, and has a short branch which runs across the border to Vetschau in Germany.

The Dutch National Railway Museum (Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum) is in Utrecht.

The Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatscappij owns some large German "Dampfloc" locos, and runs 22km between Apeldoorn and Dieren.

The STAR railway is in Northern Holland, and is the longest preserved line in the country, running for 26km between Veendam and Musselkanaal.

These pictures were taken at a couple of museums near the town of Emmen: the Industrieel Smalspoor Museum and Veen Park, a working museum with a number of preserved buildings.

These pictures were taken on the German Friesland Island of Borkum, where a narrow-gauge line runs for a few kilometres between the harbour and the main town.

The final set of pictures were taken on Holland's best known railway, the Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik, which runs for 20km between the two former coastal resorts of the same name.
